Christmas Greetings from Doug Andrew

I love this time of the year!

Traditional gatherings with family and friends are one of the reasons I look forward to the Christmas season each year.

In our family, we have built a tradition of gathering together on Christmas Eve for a turkey dinner. After dinner, I read the story of the birth of Christ from the gospel of Saint Luke in the Bible.

Carols are sung around the piano and gifts are exchanged between family members. Some years I ask family members to pretend as if this was the last time we were able to meet as a family and I then invite each family member to express to others in the family what they would want to communicate under such circumstances.

Those have been some of the most memorable and loving family gatherings.

The excitement of Santa coming Christmas Eve is now heightened as we have five grandchildren who look forward to the gifts he left at Grandma and Grandpa Andrew’s house for them.

Memories are shared of Christmases past when our own six children could hardly go to sleep on Christmas Eve and then woke up early Christmas morning, just minutes after Sharee and I finally got to bed after spending the night putting together myriad toys: bikes, car racing sets, doll buggies, playhouses and the like.

Christmas breakfast always has to include freshly made “pigs in a blanket” (link sausages wrapped in crescent rolls, baked in the oven and eaten with homemade chili sauce—a tradition from my own childhood. Such are the memories that endure for generations.

May you all enjoy a very special Christmas time this week. Regardless of religious affiliation or beliefs, this is the season for giving the gift of time to the people who are dearest to us. May we remember to be grateful for what blessings we have and the freedoms we enjoy.

I sincerely hope that 2009 will be a wonderful year for you and your family filled with true wealth—family, health, wisdom, faith, hope and charity amid these difficult economic times.
