Planning Beats Shooting From the Hip

When a year comes to an end and a new one begins, it’s a time for reflection and planning. This is true for individuals and businesses alike.

So how exactly should we approach a new beginning? Do you have a process by which you can review performance and set goals for the new year? Do you examine the successes and the setbacks and analyze what can be done differently. Do you set strategies for the coming year or do you tend to shoot from the hip?

Successful people will confirm that those who head into the future with direction tend to do much better than those who simply “take it as it comes.”

There are four key qualities that will help us choose the most abundant direction and to stay on course.

  • Clarity
  • Balance
  • Focus
  • Confidence

Whether these qualities are applied to families, individuals, businesses, or an entire nation, the outcome is always better.

Clarity is what provides us with a clear vision of what matters most to us as well as what we are trying to accomplish. Understanding exactly where we are in our finances, our health, our spirituality, and every other aspect of our lives provides profound hope and motivation for our future. Clarity is what energizes us and enables us to move with purpose.

It allows us to live our own lives rather than being sidetracked by the latest celebrity gossip or what others are doing. This quality alone is responsible for roughly half of our chances for success.

Balance can be illustrated by imagining a car cruising along at 65 mph. If there is even a small wobble in any of the tires, it can affect the vehicle’s stability and performance. If you fix that wobble, the vehicle’s efficiency, safety, and function is restored and you can enjoy peace of mind on the way to your destination.

An out of balance life is why people tend to get caught up in self-medication such as drugs, alcohol and other addictions.

This is why it is so important to have balance in all the areas of our lives so we can actually enjoy the ride. Adding the quality of balance increases the likelihood of success to roughly 90 percent.

Avoiding Distracted Living

Focus can best be understood when we recognize how many people live their lives out of focus. This can be seen in the difficulty they have in prioritizing their lives and not being sidetracked by life’s daily hiccups and distractions. Instead of being proactive about planning and following through on their life’s plan, they live moment-to-moment or paycheck-to-paycheck.

The things they cannot control tend to dominate their lives. Too often, this includes the things that don’t really matter in the long run. Determining what matters most and keeping our focus on those things over which we have control are keys to achieving a fulfilling life. Focus allows us to pursue our goals with accuracy. It raises our chances of success to 99 percent.

The previous three qualities cannot help but bring about the fourth and final quality that is necessary for an abundant life. That quality is confidence.

Confidence attracts opportunities. Lack of confidence pushes opportunities away. If you exercise faith and confidence, you will bring opportunities into your life. Again, this is true in every area of life including, relationships, finances, spirituality, and health.

Incorporating these four qualities into your plans for the coming year will bring you closer to the brighter future you envision.
